Single stream recycling is a technical term that describes the comingling of all recyclable materials (plastics, cardboard, paper, etc.) instead of being separating each item by type.

Q: What happens after a truck picks up my recycling?

Collected recyclables are sorted by people and machinery and then baled to sell back to manufacturers. Your recyclables become new products. Q: Can I recycle materials with food residue or does the material have to be perfectly clean?

Mostly: Plastic, metal and glass materials must be empty and rinsed clean of food debris before being recycled. Paper materials must be empty, clean and dry before being recycled. Wet paper/food-soiled paper products may be compostable.
